If you want to understand why a country thousands of miles from the United States cares whether your aircraft was sprayed before it left, start with one insect. Aedes aegypti is a small, dark, day-biting mosquito with white markings on its legs, and it is the reason most aircraft disinsection requirements exist.
What it carries
Aedes aegypti is the primary vector of dengue, the fastest-spreading mosquito-borne viral disease in the world, and of Zika, yellow fever and chikungunya. It does not carry malaria; that is the Anopheles mosquito, which is also a disinsection target in some regions. But the four viruses Aedes aegypti transmits are enough on their own to explain the rules. Dengue alone puts a large fraction of the world’s population at risk, and its range has been expanding.
Why it travels well
The mosquito thrives in warm, urban environments and lays its eggs in small containers of standing water, which is why it does so well around people. It also does well in aircraft. A cabin is climate-controlled, dim in the stowage areas, and moves from one warm city to another in hours. A mosquito that boards in one country can disembark in another and, if conditions suit it, establish itself. That is not a theoretical concern; it is how the species spread around the world in the first place, by ship, long before aircraft.
Who cares most
Two kinds of country. Those that are free of Aedes aegypti and want to stay that way, which includes Australia and New Zealand, whose island biosecurity systems treat the aircraft cabin as one of the few pathways they can control before arrival, and mainland Chile. And those that have the mosquito, are fighting the diseases it carries, and do not want new introductions of virus or of related species; much of the Caribbean, South America and South Asia falls here.
Italy is a particularly instructive case. It hosts an established population of the related tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus, and has recorded locally acquired dengue in recent summers. Its response includes requiring disinsection on aircraft arriving from countries where Aedes aegypti is present, and the United States is one of them.
What disinsection does about it
Disinsection kills the mosquitoes, and other insects, that are aboard the aircraft so that they do not arrive with it. The WHO’s recognized methods use approved insecticides applied to the cabin, flight deck and holds; the pre-embarkation method does it on the empty aircraft before boarding at the departure port. It is a small, controlled intervention against a small, uncontrolled traveller.
Why it matters to you
Because the mosquito’s range is expanding and the diseases it carries are not going away, the list of countries that require disinsection is not shrinking. If you fly internationally from the US, the question of whether your destination requires it is worth asking every time.
