Egypt draws two kinds of US trips: business into Cairo, and leisure into the Red Sea resorts at Sharm El Sheikh, Hurghada and Marsa Alam. Both kinds arrive under the same rule, which is that Egypt expects a direct flight from a designated country to have been disinsected, and the United States is on that list.
Egypt’s aircraft disinsection requirement
Egypt’s Ministry of Health requires disinsection on direct flights arriving from a list of designated countries, published to operators through ground handler notices rather than the AIP, and the United States is named on it. The requirement covers airlines, charter and business aircraft. On arrival the authorities take the used spray cans alongside the General Declaration and the passenger manifest, and a reported penalty of one thousand US dollars applies for non-compliance, escalating for repeat violations.
What counts as treated
Disinsection means an insecticide treatment of the aircraft interior, performed to a recognized method and documented. Egypt’s guidance names pre-departure cabin and cargo disinsection with a WHO compliant product, alongside the in-flight alternative. A clean cabin does not count, and a disinfection record does not count; they answer different questions. The standard behind all of it is the World Health Organization’s Aircraft Disinsection Methods and Procedures, 2nd edition (2023).
The routing question decides the plan
Here is the wrinkle that makes Egypt different from a straightforward European trip: many US itineraries to Cairo or the resorts stop in Europe first, for fuel or a night. Pre-embarkation disinsection is performed at the last port before the destination country. Fly non-stop and that is your US departure airport, where we treat the empty aircraft, cabin and holds, with an EPA registered aerosol at the WHO dose before boarding and hand your crew the certificate. Stop in Europe on the way and the treatment belongs at that stop instead, which takes different planning.
