Egypt draws two kinds of US trips: business into Cairo, and leisure into the Red Sea resorts at Sharm El Sheikh, Hurghada and Marsa Alam. Both kinds arrive under the same rule, which is that Egypt expects an arriving international aircraft to have been disinsected.
The requirement
Egypt requires disinsection on arriving international aircraft, private and corporate flights included. Its health authorities have been alert to Aedes aegypti along the Red Sea coast, and arriving aircraft are treated as one of the pathways to control. The aircraft is expected to land treated, with the certificate aboard for the health officer to read.
What counts as treated
Disinsection means an insecticide treatment of the aircraft interior, performed to a recognized method and documented with a certificate. A clean cabin does not count, and a disinfection record does not count; they answer different questions. The standard behind all of it is the World Health Organization’s Aircraft Disinsection Methods and Procedures, 2nd edition (2023).
The routing question decides the plan
Here is the wrinkle that makes Egypt different from a straightforward European trip: many US itineraries to Cairo or the resorts stop in Europe first, for fuel or a night. Pre-embarkation disinsection is performed at the last port before the destination country. Fly non-stop and that is your US departure airport, where we treat the empty aircraft before boarding and hand your crew the certificate. Stop in Europe on the way and the treatment belongs at that stop instead, which takes different planning.
