Aircraft Disinsection for Flights to Greece

Greece added mandatory aircraft disinsection in September 2025, which makes it the newest European requirement and the one operators most often have not heard about. Arrivals from mosquito-risk countries fall under it, the United States included, and the rule applies to private and corporate flights as well as airlines.

Why the requirement exists

Greek authorities introduced the measure to keep Aedes aegypti and other disease-carrying mosquitoes from establishing along the Mediterranean. The requirement is set out in Greece’s aeronautical publications, and enforcement is real: an aircraft arriving without valid disinsection documentation can be held on the ramp until treatment is verified.

How we handle it

We treat the empty aircraft at your US departure airport before boarding and issue the certificate, with the treatment details your crew records on the General Declaration. For a non-stop Athens arrival that is the clean path; if your routing stops elsewhere in Europe first, send the full itinerary and we will confirm where the treatment belongs.

Main international gateways: Athens (ATH), Thessaloniki (SKG), Mykonos (JMK) and Santorini (JTR). Requirements can change; we confirm the current rules for your exact route before every treatment. Page reviewed August 2026.

Route check

Tell us your route and we will confirm exactly what your aircraft needs.

Destination, departure airport, dates. We confirm the requirement, come to the aircraft, and handle the certificate.

Planning the trip

Two things to settle before you file.

Routing. Pre-embarkation covers the flight it is performed for and is done at the last port before Greece. Non-stop from the US, that is your departure airport. With a stop en route, send us the full itinerary and we will confirm where the treatment belongs.

Timing. We can often accommodate short-notice requests, but a trip we hear about early is a trip we can plan around your boarding without compromise. Send the route as soon as it is likely.

Arrival

What the arrival authority sees.

An aircraft that arrives treated, ventilated and boarded in the normal way, carrying a disinsection certificate in the format the destination accepts, with the treatment recorded on the crew’s General Declaration. Arrival becomes a formality. An aircraft that arrives without a verified treatment is typically treated on arrival with passengers aboard, under supervision, sometimes at the operator’s expense.

Questions

Greece disinsection questions, answered

Does Greece require aircraft disinsection on flights from the US?

Yes. Greece made disinsection mandatory in September 2025 for aircraft arriving from mosquito-risk countries, including the United States, and the requirement covers private and corporate flights. Send us your route and we will confirm the details and treat the aircraft at your US departure airport.

What happens if we arrive in Greece without it?

Greek authorities can hold the aircraft on arrival until treatment and documentation are put right, which costs the trip time it does not need to lose. Arriving treated, certificate aboard, keeps the arrival routine.

Can passengers be on board when the aircraft is treated for Greece?

Not for pre-embarkation. The aircraft is treated empty, before boarding, at your US departure airport, then ventilated. Passengers never see the process.

What do we carry on arrival in Greece?

The disinsection certificate we issue on completion, with the treatment recorded on the General Declaration by your crew from the details we provide. Keep the certificate with the flight documents so it can be produced on arrival.
