Aircraft Disinsection for Flights to Uruguay
Uruguay requires disinsection of arriving international flights, but it handles the treatment differently from most destinations on this site: the spraying is performed on arrival, by Uruguay’s own health authority, with everyone still aboard. That difference changes what a US operator should plan for.
Why the requirement exists
Like its neighbors, Uruguay treats arriving aircraft as a pathway for disease-carrying mosquitoes. Unlike destinations that accept a pre-departure treatment, Uruguay administers disinsection itself at the arrival airport: the aircraft holds with doors and ventilation closed while the cabin is treated, and then clears.
How we handle it
A US pre-embarkation treatment is not the method Uruguay uses, so for a non-stop flight to Montevideo there is nothing for us to treat on the US side; expect the on-arrival procedure instead, and brief your passengers so it is not a surprise. Where we do come in is the rest of the itinerary: South American trips often continue to Chile or Paraguay, which accept pre-embarkation, and we place the treatment where those legs need it. Two things to settle before you file.
Routing. Pre-embarkation covers the flight it is performed for and is done at the last port before Uruguay. Non-stop from the US, that is your departure airport. With a stop en route, send us the full itinerary and we will confirm where the treatment belongs.
Timing. We can often accommodate short-notice requests, but a trip we hear about early is a trip we can plan around your boarding without compromise. Send the route as soon as it is likely.
What the arrival authority sees.
An aircraft that arrives treated, ventilated and boarded in the normal way, carrying a disinsection certificate in the format the destination accepts, with the treatment recorded on the crew’s General Declaration. Arrival becomes a formality. An aircraft that arrives without a verified treatment is typically treated on arrival with passengers aboard, under supervision, sometimes at the operator’s expense.
